Tasting notes - Floral and tangy with notes of pomegranate and cherry.
“Muungano” is Swahili for togetherness. This co-op of around 4400 producers in western shores of Lake Kivu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Founded in 2009, the Coop has a reputation for producing fantastic coffee, along with bringing together members of different ethnic groups, and treating their members equitably, regardless of gender. This makes them a groundbreaking operation in the DRC, where it hasn’t been smooth sailing in recent memory.
The coop lies on the shores of Lake Kivu, which borders Rwanda and Burundi. The region surrounding the lake is known for high quality coffees in all of the countries. They’re classic examples of Africa’s reputation for complex, sweet and exotic coffees. While the DRC has not been able to establish a large reputation because of the logistic difficulties of exporting coffee, and historic political strife, it certainly belongs in the pantheon of favorites.
